За час роботи у видавництві оформив та проілюстрував понад 100 дитячих книг, багато з яких відзначено дипломами та преміями. У 1983 р. диплом всесоюзного конкурсу "Мистецтво книги" у Москві за книгу Ш. Перро "Попелюшка". У 1991 р. диплом та премія "Абая" за книгу "Русалочка" Г.Х. Андерсена у м. Алма-Ата. Член Спілки художників СРСР із 1983 р.

У виставках бере участь із 1979 р. Учасник міжнародних, всесоюзних та регіональних виставок. Персональні виставки: Арт-студія "На Уютной" (1999), Морська галерея (2000), Літературний музей (2003, 2010). Міжнародна виставка "Марина-2000" та "Марина-2002". З 1997 р. живе в Одесі, працює у станковому живописі та графіці.

Картини Сметаніна кінця 1990-х і 2000-х років, що виставлялися «На Уютной» та в Морській галереї, поєднували у собі глибокий графічний автоматизм, казково-ілюстративні мотиви та південні, морські сюжети.
